Description of the Outside
Cameron Island is 100 acres of deciduous native trees, planted in the last 20 years and maintained by Coillte (with their own access on the opposite side of the Island).
The Lake House, on just under 2 acres, is on the western side, facing its neighbour, Oillean Mór.
The arboretum garden is a haven for nature. It is calm and quiet, undisturbed and secluded. The air is clear and fresh.
The Harbour & Jetty have hosted a range of boats from a 35 ft. motor yacht, a 60 ft 2nd world war troop transport, a dredger barge, to canoes, paddle boards, a single scull, inflatable dinghies, a lake rowing boat and The Shuttle – a Drago fishing boat with cabin, canopy and outboard Yamaha 75cc engine to ferry the owners from its mooring on the mainland jetty five minutes away (the Shuttle is included in the sale with its trailer).
The stone jetty and the wooden decking around the harbour have been renewed recently.
The low maintenance gardens are arranged in a series of areas.
Facing west is the ‘Croquet Lawn’, the site of many hotly contested rustic croquet matches over the summer months.
South of this is the Arboretum Garden with specimen trees including a ‘Judas Tree’ or ‘Love Tree’ (Cercis siliquastrum) birches, Red Oak (Quercus rubra) with flame red leaves in autumn, copper beech and more.
Left of this and up the steps is the ‘Zen Garden’ with a range of Japanese maples, specimen pines and a Gingko.
Four gates open into the Walled Garden at the 4 compass points. It is divided by a traditional box hedge. Apple, plum, and pear trees were planted 15 years ago. The Buddleia is a great attraction for butterflies.
The Raised Lawn outside the entrance door has an attractive conifer ‘Christmas tree’ as well as some specimen pines along the perimeter.
The ‘picnic’ area has a formal lily pond with fountain and two rare weeping pear trees framing the gate leading to the harbour.
The trees in this area are underplanted with cyclamen to augment the wild variety that grows there and through the woodland area on the right through the gate. A very rare Himalayan Cotoneaster Tree was identified by the owner of the nearby tree nursery on the perimeter.
The Lakeside area has weeping willows, irises and woodland bulbs are planted in the final garden area from the low wall to the fence behind the temporary storage shed.
The local water lilies and reeds grow in the harbour, stretching beyond the boundaries defined by a discrete fence in the water on each side of the harbour.
There is Garden Shed to the rear of the walled garden.
There are no other houses on Cameron Island, blissful peace & quiet.
